Located at about 500 metres east off mainland of Vavathurai, Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a famous Tourist attractions in Kanyakumari. This impressive memorial was established to honour the great leader “Swami Vivekananda”. Few of the ancient legends have revealed that Goddess Kumari performed austerity in this rock during the olden days. Moreover, the memorial is erected between the two rocks. History of Swami Vivekananda Memorial
On 1892, Swami Vivekananda came down to Kanyakumari to
participate in the World Religious Conference. The great leader sat on this rock for
meditation (two days). After then, the sources say that Swami Vivekananda
became a powerful spiritual leader and philosopher. The Memorial was
constructed in 1970 with the way to pay tribute and respect to the leader. It
is considered to be one of the bets architectural masterpieces in India .
Structures of Vivekananda Rock Memorial
Swami Vivekananda Rock Memorial consists of two main
structures such as Vivekananda Mandapam and Sri Pada Mandapam. Both these
structures hold great value and visited by thousands of tourists every year. Let

Vivekananda Mandapam
This Vivekananda Mandapam is similar to Sri Ramakrishna
Temple in Bellur. Designed
on Ajanta and Ellora
Cave Temples
style, the mandapam has a meditation hall, assembly hall, mukha mandapam and front
entrance with two rooms. In the main hall, you can see a life-size bronze statue
of Swamiji in his standing “Parivarjak” posture.
Sri Pada Mandapam
Also known as Sri Pada Parai, Sri Pada Mandapam is an
important place in the Memorial. In this mandapam, you will find a small projection
resembling the human foot of Sri Padam. Many stories were revealed about this mandapam.
It is actually a square hall that consists of Garbha Graham, Inner Prakaram and
Outer Prakaram.
